What is Plexr Plus?

 Plasma Soft Surgery Technology

Plexr Plus (or plasma soft surgery) is a non-surgical treatment used to lift the eyes (blepharoplasty), by treating the skin laxity. It is also used to improve scars, treat moles, skin tags and other unwanted superficial skin lesions. Unlike surgical treatments for these problems, Plexr Plus does not require general anesthetic and recovery time is much shorter.

The treatment uses plasma – the fourth state of matter after solid, liquid and gas – and is performed using wireless handheld devices which are manufactured in Italy. The Plexr Plus Soft Surgery device has been used and licensed in several countries worldwide over the last 10 years. It is the first fully licensed plasma technology to be introduced in Canada.

How Plexr Plus Works

Illustration showing how the Plexr Plus device ionizes gas to create plasma at a specific 0.7 to 1mm distance from the skin, enabling precise, non-contact treatment.

Harnessing Ionized Gas for Precision Treatments

The Plexr Plus device creates plasma by ionizing gas particles between its precise 0.5mm-wide probe and the skin, creating an electrical arc. The technology is very precise so specific areas like the eyelids can be treated without touching or harming the skin.

Ultra Focused Plasma Beam

Plasma is described as “a lightning bolt”. When lightning hits the ground it vaporizes everything and leaves only black carbon. On the skin, plasma vaporizes cells and all that is left is carbon in the form of a crust.” This crust heals, leaving the treated skin behind. As well as vaporizing – or “sublimating” – unwanted skin, it has the triple effect of causing the remaining tissues to tighten and boosting collagen production.

Non-Surgical Skin Rejuvenation Solutions

Plexr Plus has a wide range of uses. The most popular is non-surgical blepharoplasty (eyelid lift), but it can also be uses for wrinkles/rytides, superficial skin lesions, scars, acne, and keloid scars.

Plasma Energy and Skin Rejuvenation

Over the past few decades, common multiple ablative and nonablative modalities have been used for skin resurfacing and rejuvenation including lasers, chemical peels, light-based energy, radiofrequency, and dermabrasion. Each has its own unique properties, as well as advantages and disadvantages.

One of the newest technological advances in this arena is the development of plasma energy to alter skin surface and architecture. As a technology, plasma energy may bridge the gap between ablative and nonablative energies.

Plexr Plus is a cordless micro-surgical hand operated device that transfers concentrated heat to the treated skin tissues. It uses the difference in voltage between the device and the patient’s skin. The difference in voltage generates a small electrical arc, similar to a minute lighting. The small lighting causes sublimation of the fluids contained in the superficial part of the skin, without unwanted heat transmission to the adjacent tissues.

Additionally, it acts on the superficial layer of the skin preserving the lower layers; this will reduce drastically any potential permanent skin damage that could be caused by the misuse of conventional lasers

Plexr Plus vs. Electrosurgical Devices:

Electrosurgical unit and Plexr Plus have different intended use. Plexr Plus is not intended to cut the tissue, but to generate retraction and perform gentle skin lesion removals sublimating layer by layer of the skin. Plexr Plus is non aggressive and does not create scars as we often see with electrosurgery but actually renews the tissue, because the parameters and the modality to generate the ark are different.

Electrosurgical units / Radio scalpels use higher power and frequency and generally need a  return pad electrode. Plexr Plus with its lower power and voltage frequency doesn’t need the returning pad and the action can be definitely considered Plasma, a gas ionized by a difference in voltage is plasma. It is important to distinguish the name of the technology to not create confusion with the collateral effect generated by an electrosurgical unit.

Plexr Plus ionizes the air between the tip and the body, generating a direct plasma on the skin, using mainly the thermal effect, but being more precise, selective and superficial, so not damaging the deep layers of the skin (dermis), but only the superficial epidermis.

What To Expect from Plexr Plus

Depending on what the area is that’s being treated patients will either be given a local anesthetic or topical anesthetic cream which takes around 45 minutes to take effect. There is no need for them to have local anesthetic injections, go under general anesthetic or stay in hospital. Non-surgical eyelid lifts (blepharoplasty) will be done with the anesthetic cream while moles and keloid scars may require an injection.

Treatment can usually be done in 10 to 40 minutes, depending on the area. Patients have reported some procedures using Plexr Plus as being painless with the anesthetic cream, but treatment area of the eye area may still have a level of discomfort and it may feel prickly.
